History of the Volkswagen 82 Kublewagen

The thought of the military version of the car was published for the first time during the imperial office and Porsche’s representative’s discussion about the cars future development on April 11th 1934. The framework was considered to have the carrying capacity of three men and a light machine gun including ammunition. The army demanded that the car should have a carrying capacity of four soldiers with munitions. This was communicated to the firm Porsche only on January 26th 1938. The constructors from the Porsche firm realised that the whole cars weight shouldn’t exceed 950kg for good mounted properties in the terrain. That means that the car weight should have been 150kg lower than that of civilian execution of the car. As the weight of the car framework itself was 400kg and planned loads was 400kg the weight remaining for the body was only 150kg. It was necessary to go by new ways in this sphere. The problem was solved in close co-operation with firm Trutz in Giotha.
The HWA (Heereswaffenamt) passed the order for the manufacturing of the prototype on February 1st 1938. The prototype was displayed already on November 3rd 1938. So this is how the Kublewagen was born. The abbreviation; VW-82 – Kublewagen.
As the HWA had no objectives against the presented model. The test rides already began in that month. The first terrain car VW (type 62) was showed to the public at the Vienna car salon in 1939. Professor Porsche improved the terrain passage of the car by increasing of the ground clearance and by including inserted gears on the hind axis. The car was powered similarly as the civilian version by the four cylinder flat engine with pistons against each other with a cylinder volume of 985 cm’. This model was denominated as the type 82 and was serially produced in the VW factory in Wolsburg since 1940. The car body was delivered by the firm Ambi-budd-Werken. This type was generally known under the denomination ‘kublewagen’ in the army. 1000 pieces of this car left the production belt only in the year 1940. The cars VW-82 came individually into the battle action already in France, but they appeared in greater number only in the North Africa invasion. The basic type was delivered in greater numbers to front in the following designs.
-4 seat for men -4 seat direction finder car -3 seat light radio-communication car -2 seat car for carrying of injured persons. The cars of the type VW-82 were equipped with engines of cylinder volume 1130cm since March 1943.
About 55’000 pieces of VW-82 cars of all designs were produced altogether and they testified themselves owing to the small weight and especially to the air cooled engine in the extreme conditions whether in the sand of desert or in the mud and cold weather in the USSR.
